The Cutty Sark was being kept at Greenwich in South-East London to undergo restoration, when the fire, suspected to be a result of arson, started. Three tonnes of Mizkan Europe’s finest wooden vinegar vats were delivered to the Cutty Sark project to use in its rebuilding (formally Mizkan UK). The vats were made with Douglas-fir from Vancouver Island, Canada. Having been grown and matured for several decades, this wood is much denser and harder wearing than wood, making it suitable to build with. Seasoning the wood prevents it from splitting and warping, increases its strength, protects it against decay, and prepares it for the application of paint, polish glue etc.
The Cutty Sark Restoration Trust has found it very difficult to source sufficient quantities of high grade reclaimed timber, so was delighted to receive Mizkan Europe’s donation of such good quality, aged material. A previous donation of mahogany from Mizkan Europe had been provided for the restoration of the Cutty Sark’s lifeboats, being used for the rudder and seats. The wood was carefully transported from Mizkan’s vinegar plant at Burnstwood, Staffordshire by Wincanton transport services.
